Murdhuacha of the Kelp Forests

Literary Sketch

She knows the seal peoples coming and going. She watches the battles that brew between a race of the sea and a race of the land. Polution is bearing a heavy toll on the creatures of the sea, as the creatures suffer the magic is turning darker. The gentle selkie are not pleased.
Down in the deeps of the kelp forest she makes her home. She does not tolerate strangers well, so beware of bewitched kelp. To avoid the sting and strangle of the kelp you will want to spen dmuch time eating the plants of the sea so your scent and energy are more aligned to them.
She is also extra wicked in her desiring for shining and light filled objects. To win her welcome and get her to share her knowledge you need to use a large fresh water pearl. The properties of the pearl will also calm her temper and bring out her more noble side.

She is one of the many characters I sketched out visual and literary concepts while I had the snagfu with the twitter mystery. I found it so productive I have begun to do character sketches daily- Really loving it!

Custom Celtic Knotwork II

These are the other custom celtic knotwork designs that will be used on my main site. The triskel is going to be challenging to paint with the gold but it will be so worth it! The raven/crows being a theme of mine have continued but downplayed. The picture of the one in the middle is and end/bottom cap for the last R in Baker. I am quite happy at how it will work as a design element to put the eyes back toward the center of the page!

I thank all of you that have given, and continue to give me so much feedback and encouragement! Especially my Amy, my soul sister, my best friend, my anam cara- I can not wait to see you next month!

Custom Celtic Knotwork

This is a sampling of the custom celtic knotwork illustration that I am working on for my main website.  It is just one step. I will be placing my gallery there and will have originals for sale there. Then once it is all done I will have to get the main site for the merchandise ready.

I have had ideas bouncing around for a while and finally they all cemented into a cohesive vision! What was most exciting is the collaboration that is coming out of it. You can see above the various parts are interlinkable in many pattern possibilities. Someone I went to college with has decided that my patterns would make good clip art or fonts- So we are working out the details. For this reason, I can not show all the other segments created for this particular pattern set. Just these that are illustrated thus for my site.

Tomorrow you will see more of the custom Celtic Knotwork that is being used. I am so excited to share it. I seem to have phases with my various genre and feel it has been a tad too long since I have designed any. I hope you enjoy!

Faerie sketch

This sketch is from an entry in my journal in 2001 while healing from a surgery in the wee hours of the morning unable to sleep. This Faery is hiding underneath a Spider Lily. The literary concept idea I was working on then is that Faeries “fold light” to prevent themselves from being seen.
The Spider Lily is very sweet smelling and beautiful, and was a favorite resting spot of dragonflies in my garden. Mine was a gift from my best friends Karnjana’s garden. She had visited me earlier in the day- so maybe that is part of where the inspiration came from.

Zebra- African Sunrise phase 1

Finished the first phase of the African sunrise in the background and the details in the foreground. Artist board requires thicker layering than I am used to but it is a good exercise in adapting techniques. Naples yellow is becoming a very versatile and favorite yellow pigment of mine.

I am getting addicted to working on larger scale. OH MY! With my love of detail it will really lengthen my finish times on some projects. Particularly the wildlife scene I am working on with the wood frogs. I am putting a few buggy things in the scene, and probably will place a snake peeking out somewhere. This will emphasize the circle of life and the diversity of the wetlands which I love so much!

In a week or two we should start finding Dragonfly nymphs climbing out and shedding to reveal their amazing wings! It is an awesome thing to watch if you haven’t before- get out and find a natural pond somewhere, the event will not disappoint.

Zebra Colt stippling

This stipling is the first step in a mixed media piece with watercolor. I can not wait to add to an african horizon in. The original is 20″x15″ . If the detail block does not show it. Let me tell you stipling takes hours and hours of repetitive dots. many of these were with a 0000 rapidograph pen. UGH, happy with the result and the end of the stipling.

I can’t wait to show it to everyone when it is done. I did hi res scans of it in just black and white for experimenting with post print fat on lean giclee reproductions.

Experimenting with wet ink and watercolor

It is interesting to be a little bored when you have all day to play in your studio space. Maybe I should just blame it on springtime restlessness. Today I just completely abandoned all my norms. The day made me remember professor O’Slattery, years ago when I  took his class at KCAD.

He really pushed us EVERY MINUTE to not think about the art but to just DO the art. A kind of “follow your art don’t lead it” kind of thing.

So after meticulously and boringly painting in the elaborate knotwork on another piece with ink. I opened up my drawer and yanked out a few bottles of ink. These are color inks that are rapidograph friendly. I then grabbed the first thing that stuck out to me that was transfered to canvas and not started.

I masked off her outline and then just stopped thinking. I dabbed my brush and threw on some wet blobs then stuck it in the green ink and just smeared it around, then some more, and a little blue. As I worked I noticed a scen developing so I started to add in neutral tint and indigo watercolor. I was surprised how well they mixed.

After the first sit, I decided to darken it and sponge away. I loved some of the effects so much I started dabbing some yellow in to show light breaking trhough and dandelions on the forest glen like floor. There I was again – leading it too much and making it overdone.
So I brushed it all out in with a layer of black watercolor so it would be underdeveloped again. Today I started painting the little sprite in, and look forward to seeing how layering techniques work over the ink.

I just love how thos first blobs of water resisted the ink and added to the effect of the light in the forest!

Pandeia Luna Moth / Moon Faerie – first phases

I have finished the bulk of the work on this faery painting. What art work is left to do is a little slower, on account of the brush size I work with for details. I do still have to finish shading the birch before I work with any highlighting too.

I am holding off on this because I still have to get the base tones into the figure of the faery. The last art detailing must be done together to show consistency and proper emphasis. I approach chiarascuro (contrast of light) with much trepidation. It comes so natural for some people but I am kind of a “wuss” and am afraid to go too far and be stuck.

The last purposeful exercise in chiarascuro was doing this with Pears. It turned out pretty well, but this faery painting is more challenging because of the inclusion of the light source with a subtle secondary light source around the figure of the faery.

The image is actually 12″x12″ but I only did a quick scan of the art piece. This cut off the left and right margins a tad.
